Each year around the middle of June members from Aikido Suenaka-Ha Ashland and the affiliated dojos make the trek to Cheraw State Park in Cheraw, South Carolina and participate in Summer Camp. This event has been held at this location for at least 25 years. We look forward to this event because it provides Suenaka-Ha Tetsugaku-Ho students the opportunity to learn directly from Sensei Suenaka.
Summer camp is a very unique experience and a dare say the very few Aikido programs have any sort of event similar to what Suenaka-Ha Tetsugaku-ho offers. This is events affords us the opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new friends. This event has a communal spirit to it where the success of this event rides on each and every member contributing. Everyone share in carrying out such task as setting up the dojo, creating living spaces, meal prep, laundry (hahaha) to name just a few activities. We practice Aikido everyday several times a day and sometimes into the next day. The amount of information provided can be overwhelming but the growth and development during camp is amazing. A highlight of this week is to watch and participate in dan testing. Not only do we have the opportunity to learn directly from Sensei Suenaka, there are also opportunities to learn from the other dojo chos. This is awesome.
